VA Secretary
Eric Shinseki
on his arrival ceremony as US Army
Chief of Staff

“…they and the other men of the 442nd, the 100th Battalion, the Military Intelligence Service, and the 1399th Engineers, bought for me and my generation our birthrights as American citizens. Because of what they, and others of their generation, did on those distant battlefields so many years ago, I have lived my life without suspicion, without limitation, with the full rights and privileges of citizenship, and with the opportunity to compete.”

Books and References

We have a collection of books and reference materials related to the Nisei soldier experience, as well as books related to the Issei (first generation Japanese) immigrants to Hawaii.

We are currently updating our catalogue in anticipation of our move into our Education Building.

Leonard Oka, Center secretary and founder of Maui's Sons and Daughters of the Nisei Veterans, reviews the Center's reference collection with Center architect Earl Kono.

Long time insurance agent, Jim Smith, donated 18 hardcover bound volumes of the Honolulu Advertiser from December 1, 1941 through December 31, 1945, as well as the paper’s 1959 special edition on Hawaii’s statehood to our Nisei Veterans Archives.

I’ve been lugging those books around with me my whole adult life, and from time to time thought about selling them or donating them.  When my wife and I saw the article in the Maui News about your Education Building, we knew we had finally found the right home for my father’s collection.”
