Phase I: Adult Day
Care & Preschool
Phase I: Sharing Moments,
Bridging Lifetimes
The first phase of our Intergenerational
Center includes exciting "firsts" in the State of Hawaii:
- The first intergenerational program
designed from the ground up to include seniors' daily participation
as part of the preschool curriculum.
- The first high-functioning day
care program for adults in early-stage Alzheimer’s. The
program is also well suited to seniors who have suffered a stroke
or other physical impairment, but who continue to function at
a high level of cognition.

A recent morning at the Center found the youngsters and seniors playing with Legos. Manipulating the building blocks helps to improve youngsters' finger dexterity, and it helps the seniors to exercise their spatial perception.

Here, seniors who are physically frail or
suffer from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia come
for day care and enjoy a broad range
of social and recreational activities.
Those who choose to are able to mentor
-- and learn from -- the youngsters in the co-located Kansha Preschool.
They share story, music, and snack time.
Stiff hands and nimble fingers collaborate on sculpting
papier mache mountains. Elderly backs and spry legs tend
prized vegetables in the Intergenerational Garden.
As they share moments, they celebrate
life and bridge lifetimes. |
