Phase I: Preschool
Nurturing & Innovative Preschool
Kansha Preschool is an early childhood program
with a very special intergenerational component.
Our preschool is co-located with an adult
day care facility operated by Maui Adult Day Care Centers. Each
day, a portion of our activities are shared learning experiences
with the seniors.

Kansha Preschool is designed for families
who want their youngsters to appreciate the richness of lives lived.
The children develop bonds of friendships with the seniors,
and through those bond, gain an appreciation for diversity
and an insight into the challenges we all face as a part of living.

Our Facility
Our classroom accommodates 14 children,
ages three through five, and we maintain a 1-to-7 adult-to-child
staffing ratio. Fronting our classroom is a custom-built tricycle
path, play structure and playground. We have an Intergenerational
Garden area, and a protected lanai for art projects.
Curriculum
The children’s learning experience
is a partnership: We provide the framework, guidance and tools to
engage the children’s
interests in learning and constructing a knowledge base that
is meaningful to them.

We encourage activities where the actions
of the participants (both youngsters and seniors) determine
the outcome. Through these open-ended activities, children learn
cause-and-effect, and develop analytical skills of why and what
if.
Together, we learn about the rich history
and culture of our community; the people – ordinary and extraordinary – who
form our community; and how we can all be positive contributors
to our community and the world.

Our school year runs from August through
