Hanashi Oral History Project

December 5, 2007

Our thanks Masa Hokama, Masa Miyake, Howard Murakami, Shigeru Nakamura, Masanobu Tamayose, Meyer Ueoka, and Ann Wakamatsu who came to our Center to record their oral history as part of our joint effort with the Go for Broke National Education Center, based in Los Angeles.

CALLING ALL VETERANS: Please kokua on this very important project to record the life histories of the Nisei soldiers.

You don’t have to have any momentous wartime experiences. Every person’s experience is a piece of the puzzle that we’re putting together to tell the whole story.

If you want to know what’s involved, give us a call, or call any of the veterans who have already recorded their stories.

Do it for your grandchildren.  Do it for your buddies who never came back from war.

Using Go for Broke’s broadcast-quality camera, sound equipment, and professional lighting, we are recording the life stories of our veterans, their wives, and widows.  The historical recording begins with their birthplace, parents, parents’ occupation, siblings, early childhood, and then goes through their war time experiences and post-war years.

These records will help us develop educational material to teach future generations about the Nisei soldiers – firsthand accounts of thoughts and feelings, and perhaps a glimpse into why they accomplished so much on the battlefield, even in the face of doubt and distrust

442 Veteran Howard Murakami works with Cory Shiozaki from the Go for Broke National Education Center in Los Angeles to adjust the equipment in preparation for his interview. Maui Sons and Daughters of the Nisei Veterans volunteers Jill Izumigawa-Ross and Leonard Oka look on.

Cory adjusts microphone for MIS veteran Meyer Ueoka.

Please help us build our collection of Maui Nisei veterans' recollections and experiences.
