Hiroshi Arisumi (NVMC president) and David "Buddy" Nobriga (MS&I
chairman).
Maui
Soda & Ice Works, Ltd. selected the Nisei Veterans Memorial
Center as the recipient of a $10,000 award from the Coca-Cola
Bottlers Association Foundation.
The Coca-Cola Bottlers Association
Foundation rotates its donations throughout the country, and this
year locally-owned Coca-Cola bottler Maui Soda & Ice Works
had an opportunity to nominate local nonprofits for the award.
Michael A. Nobriga, president and general
manager of Maui Soda & Ice
Works, Ltd. noted, “This award to the Nisei veterans project
is our way of giving back to a group of men who were always there
for us, and for the community. One of my fondest memories is
working side by side with them at special events like the County
Fair when it was at the old Kahului Fairgrounds. We would be there
early delivering ice to the various booths, and the veterans would
always offer some of their Teriyaki chicken plates. We had many
442 nd veterans who were long-time, valued employees of Maui Soda.
“The Nisei Veterans center is going to be a resource for
our whole community. It’s just like them to be taking care
of our community.”
The funds will be used to help construct
Maui’s first Intergenerational
Center, including a preschool and an adult day care facility. The
adult day care facility will provide a nurturing day program for
seniors with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, as well
as physical frailties. The preschool will offer a program that
includes many collaborative activities between the youngsters and
the seniors.
