April 10, 2005
Island Insurance Foundation, the charitable entity established by Island Insurance Company, Ltd., Hawaii's largest locally owned and managed insurance carrier, has awarded a $25,000 grant to the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center (NVMC) and its capital campaign to build Maui’s first intergenerational center as a lasting tribute to the Nisei veterans of World War II.

Wayne Hikida, Island Insurance Vice President of Agency Relations, presented a $25,000 check to Center executive director Barbara Watanabe at Island Insurance's corporate office in downtown Honolulu.
“We are pleased to be able to honor the most decorated war heroes of our generation by supporting the construction of a memorial center that will be home to intergenerational programs and adult day care services in one facility. It will be a living tribute to a great generation of men who served their country with unparalleled valor and then returned to help shape our State to be the diverse and vital place it is today,” noted Colbert Matsumoto, Island Insurance Chairman of the Board.
As he presented the grant to NVMC Executive Director Barbara Watanabe, Wayne Hikida, Island Insurance Vice President of Agency Relations said, “We are grateful to your organization which has persevered for so many years to make the Center a reality. The intergenerational programs will bring an ongoing vibrancy to the Center and we are proud to support such a well planned homage to our Nisei Veterans.”
