2006 Benefit Dinner: Big Boots to Fill

November 12, 2006

Lieutenant Colonel Howard Sugai of the 9th Regional Readiness Command at Fort Shafter will be the keynote speaker at our fourth annual benefit dinner, which will be held on Sunday, November 12, 2006 at the King Kamehameha Golf Club.

Lt. Colonel Sugai spoke with 442nd RCT veterans at the 2005 homecoming celebration on Maui for the 411th Engineer Battalion which had just completed its one-year tour of duty in Iraq.

In keeping with the evening’s theme, “Big Boots to Fill,” Colonel Sugai will be sharing testimonials from Army Reserve Soldiers currently serving with the 100th Battalion.  The Center will also honor Hiroshi Arisumi and Leonard Oka who worked tirelessly, since the project’s inception in the mid-1980s, to build a memorial to the Nisei soldiers of World War II.

“I’ll be sharing testimonials by Army Reserve Soldiers of the 100th Battalion who will talk about what the legacy of the Nisei soldiers means to them,” said Lieutenant Colonel Sugai.  “We’ll show you some of the events the Hawaii Army Reserve is participating in that are keeping alive the rich traditions and honor of the 100th Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.”

Lieutenant Colonel Sugai received his commission through the Army ROTC program at the University of Hawaii and was designated a Distinguished Military Graduate.  His first assignment was a platoon leader with Company C, 3rd Battalion, 36th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 3rd Armored Division in Kirch Goens, Federal Republic of Germany.  He later served in Frankfurt, Germany and Tongduchon, Korea.  In 1984 he joined the Army Reserve in Hawaii and served as Executive Officer, 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry, “Go for Broke!” until September 1987.  In 1994 he received his current assignment with the 9th Regional Readiness Command.

This year the Center will be presenting its first ever
“Kansha Award” to Hiroshi Arisumi and Leonard Oka.

In 1982 Leonard Oka founded Maui’s Sons and Daughters of the 442nd, the first such organization of its kind in the country.  Their vision was to build a memorial center to honor the Nisei soldiers of World War II.

Hiroshi Arisumi, long-time community leader, joined the effort in the mid 1980s and has been the backbone of the Center’s fund raising effort.
