Center Principles
The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center honors
a generation of patriots, and reflects their values of caring
for the young and the old through its Intergenerational
Center which is open to all in the community.
Reflect time-honored values
Through the Intergenerational Center, the
time-honored Japanese values of okage sama de (I am what
I am because of you) and kodomo no tame ni (for the sake
of the children) live on: the children soak up the wisdom
of the elders, and the seniors have the reassurance of knowing
that they continue to be valued members of the community.

Build fabric of community
Here, seniors who are physically frail or
suffer from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia come
for day care with the highly-regarded nonprofit agency, Maui
Adult Day Care Centers. which offers
a broad range of social and recreational activities.
They have opportunities to mentor and
learn from youngsters in the co-located Kansha Preschool. Together
they share story, music, and snack time. Stiff hands and nimble
fingers collaborate on art projects. Elderly backs and spry
legs tend prized vegetables in the Intergenerational Garden. |
Solid financial footing
The leases with Maui Adult Day Care Centers and Kansha
Preschool provide long-term tenancy and a solid financial footing
for the ongoing maintenance and operation of the Nisei Veterans
Memorial Center.
