Dream Coming True

The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center is located on the island of Maui, overlooking Kahului Harbor.
|
On a 2.02-acre site which was generously donated by Alexander & Baldwin, Inc., on the island of Maui, we are constructing a three-building complex to honor the three major Nisei units of World War II:
- 100th Infantry Battalion
- 442nd Regimental Combat Team
- Military Intelligence Service.

Phase I: Adult Day Care and Preschool
In July 2006 we opened our doors of the first phase of our "living memorial," an intergenerational facility that provides a nurturing environment for seniors and youngsters.
The senior care is provided by Maui Adult Day Care Centers (MADCC), a nonprofit organization with more than 30 years of experience in providing care for the elderly, and the youngsters are enrolled in Kansha Preschool (KP), a brand new early education program founded by the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center.
Each day seniors and youngsters collaborate on art projects (like finger painting), crafts (like building with Legos), and just-for-fun time (like blowing bubbles).
|

The first phase of construction, completed in July 2006, includes an adult day care building (center) and a preschool building (left), which have been leased to Maui Adult Day Care Centers and Kansha Preschool, respectively. These nonprofit tenants offer nurturing and stimulating programs for youngsters and seniors in our community. |
Phase II: Education Center
The second phase of construction is expected to begin in 2008. Our Education Center will include an archive room to store Nisei veterans photos, documents, military papers, and oral/video interviews. An adjoining classroom will be available to students for lectures, seminars, and to research History Day projects.
When complete, our intergenerational center
will touch all generations as it nurtures the very young, cares
for the old, and teaches our children about the patriotism,
sacrifice and courage of the Nisei veterans.
