EDUCATION CENTER (BY APPOINTMENT ONLY)

The Education Center is the heart and soul of the NVMC campus in that it houses the Nisei Veterans Archives which include an extensive collection of books, oral histories and one-of-a-kind family albums, photographs and personal communiqués from World War II.

Its workroom doubles as a classroom for hosting high school and college seminar classes where students can consider the parallels between the Nisei soldiers’ experience and today’s struggle to define individual rights vs. national security.

Students learn about the value of citizenship, honor and integrity through the humble words of Nisei veterans who left Maui’s plantation camps and through their service to their country made an indelible mark in history.

NURTURE

OUR CAMPUS

PEACE PARK

NVMC donated this 4.5 acre parcel to the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust in 2015 in honor of all Maui veterans. Located between our campus and the Kanaloa Avenue/Kahului Beach Road intersection, it will include a nature trail, small public parking area, picnic tables, benches and information signs.  It is a habitat for wildlife and native plants such as naupaka.  There are two known historic sites on the property: a Hawaiian cultural site and the remnants of the Kahului Railroad’s rock crusher which operated from 1920 until 1946 when it was damaged by a tsunami.  “We respect HILT’s distinguished record of land stewardship and conservation, and believe that our collaboration will result in a lasting tribute to our veterans,” said Brian Moto, Nisei Veterans Memorial Center president.
